Instructions
-
Set the oven to 180°C and let it heat while you prepare the oats.
~10 min
-
Core the apple and cut it into 1.5 cm pieces, leaving the skin on for texture.
~3 min
Cutting the apple into even 1.5 cm pieces keeps them tender at the same time as the oats set.
Dicing Cut apple into even 1.5 cm cubes so they cook at the same rate; uneven pieces may turn mushy or stay firm.
-
In the baking dish, stir together 50 g oats, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 0.5 tsp cinnamon, a pinch of salt and 120 ml water until evenly combined. Fold in the apple pieces.
~3 min
Mixing dry ingredients first prevents clumping; water hydrates oats so they cook evenly and absorb liquid.
Folding Use a gentle lifting motion to combine apples without crushing them or overmixing, which keeps pieces intact.
-
Melt 15 g butter, then drizzle it over the oat mixture. Sprinkle the remaining 1 tbsp brown sugar on top.
~2 min
Melting butter lets it coat oats evenly, while sugar on top caramelizes into a golden crust.
-
Bake uncovered for 25 minutes, until the oats are tender, the water is absorbed and the top is golden at the edges.
~25 min
Uncovered baking lets excess water evaporate, so oats set and edges brown instead of steaming.
If the oats still taste firm when you check them, add 2 tbsp water, cover the dish with foil and bake 5 more minutes.
-
Let the dish stand for 5 minutes so the oats firm up and the apple cools slightly before eating.
~5 min
Resting allows residual heat to finish cooking and lets oats firm up as they cool.
